The patrolmen had flagged down a commuter bus near Lucena City, 100km south of Manila yesterday and were approaching the vehicle when communist guerrillas inside the bus opened fire on them, the police report said. The guerrillas of the communist New People's Army (NPA) then took four pistols, two rifles and a shotgun from their victims."

They killed two of the volunteer militia members and wounding two others, a military report said. He said Arab fighters were in control of streets in Mansur and other districts in the west of the city as well as Aadhamiya and Waziriya in the north.
