New fears that Maoist group re-emerging in Peru
"Fears are rising in Peru that the Maoist rebel group, Shining Path, is re-emerging. As Clinton Porterous reports, five soldiers and two civilians have been shot dead in Peru's worst guerilla attack in three years.

Soldiers on patrol in remote Peru have walked into a death trap. The Defence Ministry has confirmed that five military personnel, and two civilian guides, were shot dead in an ambush. The attack comes just one month after the mass kidnapping of pipeline workers, in nearby south-eastern Peru. The infamous guerilla group, Shining Path, has been linked to both attacks. The latest strike has raised new fears of the group's re-surgence. Shining Path all but disappeared last decade, but is blamed for some 15,000 deaths since 1980."

Philippines: Jalandoni on peace talks
"House Speaker Jose de Venecia’s assurances that the Communist Party of the Philippines and New People’s Army could expect to be taken off the foreign terrorist organizations (FTO) lists of the United States and European Union confirms that the government played an active role in having the communist rebels tagged as terrorist groups.
This was the reaction of National Democratic Front (NDF) chief peace negotiator Luis Jalandoni to news reports quoting de Venecia as saying he had assured CPP founder Jose Maria Sison, who is also included on the FTO list, that the CPP and NPA would be delisted “on the eve of” the signing of a final peace pact the government wants the rebels to agree to. At the same time, Jalandoni clarified that there was nothing definite about de Venecia’s statement on the resumption of stalled peace negotiations in the last week of this month in Oslo, Norway."
