Kurd rebels stay in Iraq mountains despite amnesty
"An amnesty law designed to end a Kurdish rebellion in southeast Turkey has so far failed in its primary aim of enticing the guerrillas down from the Iraqi mountains, a Turkish official said on Tuesday. The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) launched a separatist campaign in the southeast nearly 20 years ago and over 30,000 people have died in the conflict. The 1999 capture of rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan curbed the violence, but last week's end to a five-year PKK ceasefire fuelled fears of renewed fighting."
